    At the Institute for Strategic Management at Johannes Kepler University in Linz (AT), a PhD position (incl. a paid Fellowship at the Weizenbaum Institute in Berlin, DE) is available starting August 1, 2023 (exact starting date is negotiable). Members of the institute have publications in top international journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, MIS Quarterly, and Organization Science. We are proud of our participatory and innovative teaching and our successful collaboration with important companies in the region. As an important part of this team, the successful candidate will develop and implement an independent dissertation project on agile and decentralized forms of organizing (e.g. Holacracy, Scaled Agile Framework, Scrum, Sociocracy, Teal), using methods for collecting and analyzing digital traces of organizational decision-making processes (digital trace data). The supervision will be jointly provided by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Waldemar Kremser and Prof. Dr. Jan Mendling. Waldemar Kremser is the head of the Institute for Strategic Management at JKU and an expert in research on agile and decentralized forms of organizing. Jan Mendling is the Einstein Professor for Process Science at the Institute of Computer Science at Humboldt University in Berlin, Principal Researcher at the Weizenbaum Institute - Research for the Networked Society, and one of the world's leading researchers in the field of Process Mining. In implementing the dissertation project, the future position holder will also concurrently begin a paid research fellowship at theWeizenbaum Institute - Research for the Networked Society. Within the scope of this fellowship, the successful candidate will spend at least 4 weeks each year in Berlin conducting research and have the opportunity to collaborate with international top researchers in the analysis of digital traces. Furthermore, the successful candidate will benefit from the Institute for Strategic Management's excellent relationships with both the regional business community and international top research in the areas of strategy, organization, business informatics, and computer science. As a doctoral candidate, they will be intensively supported in building an independent research profile (e.g. through joint publications, conference attendance, integration into existing research networks). Administrative and teaching obligations aremoderate and can be aligned with the applicant's competency profile.

     

    Job Duties:

        Planning and implementing a dissertation project on decentralized and agile forms of organizing using methods for collecting and analyzing digital traces and various forms of big data 

        Building your own research profile through publication activities, active participation in scientific conferences, further education through workshops (e.g. on didactics or research methods), etc. 

        Independent teaching activities in German and/or English language, equivalent to 2 semester hours per week (approx. 1 course) 

        Co-supervising academic papers (Bachelor and Master theses) 

        Supporting administrative and management tasks of the institute 

        Proactively networking between the Institute for Strategic Management at JKU and the Weizenbaum Institute in Berlin 

    Your Qualifications:

        The successful candidate must hold a completed Master's or Diploma degree in social and economic sciences or computer science, or equivalent academic qualification (e.g. Computational Social Systems); specialization in the field of (strategic) management, business informatics, or data science is advantageous 

        Very good basic knowledge of methods from computational social sciences (e.g. simulation studies, data mining, process mining, text mining) 

        Programming skills (e.g. Java, Python, R, MySQL) are advantageous 

        Experience in extracting, preparing, and analyzing digital traces from specific data sources (e.g. ERP systems, GitHub) is advantageous 

        Very good English language skills (level C1) are required; German language skills are advantageous  First publications in academic or non-academic outlets are advantageous 

     

     

    What We Offer:

        On the basis of full-time employment (40 hours/week) the minimum salary in accordance with the collective agreement is € 3,277.30 gross per month (14 x per year, CA Job Grade: B1)
