We, Lior Zalmanson, Aleksi Aaltonen, and Daisy Xu, invite you to join the professional development workshop at AOM 2026 "Algorithmic Management Beyond Platforms: Data, AI, and Governance of Work".
Algorithmic management has expanded into core organizational processes, increasingly embedded in "ordinary" organizational contexts, such as internal HR analytics, performance dashboards, scheduling systems, workflow tools, and a growing family of AI-based assistants and decision-support tools.
This raises questions about agency, autonomy, control, trust, and human dignity-not only for gig workers but for employees and managers at all levels. It also foregrounds the intricate data work that makes algorithmic management possible: the collection, curation, integration, and repurposing of trace data, communication data, and performance data, alongside the increasingly sensitive biometric data about employees.
This Professional Development Workshop brings together scholars from multiple perspectives to discuss how algorithmic management unfolds in organizational settings, and how data work and AI-intensive modelling may evolve going forward.
We are very fortunate to be joined by scholars who are exceptionally well positioned in this research area, including Alexander Benlian, Mareike Möhlmann, and Martin Wiener. Aleksi Aaltonen will also discuss how the data work behind algorithms further complicates this already intricate organizational setting.
