Summary: As expertise is challenged and reorganized by clients, citizens, and algorithms, our assumptions about who gets to know, decide, and influence are being reconsidered. This sub-plenary brings together scholars working across professions, organizations, institutions, and science and technology to examine how expertise is changing and what organization scholars should make of these transformations. Rather than treating these developments simply as the erosion of expert authority, the session explores how expertise is being reconfigured through new actors, new arenas of contestation, and new forms of organizing.
The discussion will speak to scholars interested in expertise, work and occupations, platforms and digital technologies, AI, organization theory, science and innovation, communication, and broader questions of authority and legitimacy in today's society.
