    Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you to the Advancing Scholarship on Data: Theories, Methods, and Insights on Data-Intensive Technologies Professional Development Workshop that will be held at the Academy of Management 2025 Annual Meeting in Copenhagen on Saturday, July 26 at 2:00 to 4:00 at Bella Center in Hall B B5-m8. There is no separate registration required. If you are researching data, this will be a great opportunity to discuss your work with our excellent lineup of presenters and expert discussants!

    Overview

Many popular topics in digital technology are intimately tied to data. Recent developments in generative AI, blockchain-based organizing, or digital twins rely extensively on new kinds of data produced, circulated, and brought together in the digital environment. Governing these and other similar technologies and understanding their various impacts on individuals, organizations, and society at large require new theorizing, methodological developments, and empirical insights that help account for the role of data in contemporary digital technology. In this professional development workshop, we explore the opportunities and challenges that the emerging data-intensive technologies pose for data scholars.

We widen participation in the discussions by inviting emerging scholars to open the workshop by presenting their work on novel data-intensive phenomena. We particularly focus on five areas: 1) synthetic data, 2) digital twins, 3) personal data, 4) data and AI, and 5) data governance. First, five presenters provide an overview of their recent research in these areas, followed by breakout group discussions with participants working in these areas led by five expert discussants regarding theories, methods, and insights into the study of data in each area. Finally, the expert discussants convene into a panel to provide summative insights and suggestions for data scholars in these areas.

Synthetic data Angelo Romasanta Eric Monteiro
Digital twins Dragana Paparova Kalle Lyytinen
Personal data Johanna Lorenz Margunn Aanestad
Data and AI Jodie Koh Hind Benbya
Data governance Olivia Benfeldt Christine Legner

    Format

The PDW will adopt a highly interactive format and will bring together a mix of emerging scholar presenters and expert discussants from multiple perspectives on data research. The aim is to engage participants in interactive discussions to share their points of view and experience, learn from other participants, presenters and discussants, share insights, and to reflect on each other's research. The workshop will allow participants to find answers, inspiration, and will serve as a source of potential future collaborations. We will start with a short introduction by the co-organizers (10 minutes). Then, five presenters will briefly outline their recent work in one of the five areas of focus (5 minutes each, 25 minutes total).

The presentations will serve as an introduction to the five focus areas and will allow the participants to select the breakout group to join. Breakout groups will consist of a presenter, participants, and a discussant who has experience in the area. The groups will allow each participant to introduce themselves and their work, and will involve everyone in discussing theories, methods, and empirical insights in each area (40 minutes). This format will allow participants to develop their research in a given area of focus.

Each breakout group will nominate a rapporteur to take notes from the discussion that will precede the discussant in the final part of the workshop and form a basis for a potential panel report publication (10-minute break to prepare notes). Lastly, each discussant will provide a synthesis of their perspectives on theories, methods, and insights in each area (30 minutes). Finally, the organizers will conclude (5 minutes).

We look forward to meeting you in Copenhagen: Saturday, July 26 at 2:00 to 4:00 at Bella Center in Hall B B5-m8!
