    Social Media, Artificial Intelligence and Technology Development: A Social Justice Perspective

    Our panel symposium focuses on the scholarly challenges of studying social media analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and technology development using a social justice perspective. Employing an interdisciplinary perspective, our panelists will foreground the complex ways technological development, social media, and AI can disempower people, in turn, perpetuating social injustice.

    Panelists’ presentations will be on:

    -             Technology Development, Caste, and Precarity: A Case Study of Crematorium Industry in India - Ramaswami Mahalingam (University of Michigan)

    -             Disinformation, Social Justice and Social Media Analytics - Pratyush Bharati (University of Massachusetts, Boston) and Carol Lee (Northeastern University)

    -             Cross-cultural Considerations in Algorithmic Bias - Vinodkumar Prabhakaran (Google)

    -             Building Inclusive Technologies for Sanitation Workers in the Digital Era - Azhagu Meena S. P. (University of Toronto)
